Archdiocesan Cathedral Honors Shipowner Peter C. Georgiopoulos

The Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity honored Peter C. Georgiopoulos with the Holy Trinity Award at its 81st Annual Gala on September 17 at The Plaza Hotel in Manhattan. Some 500 members and guests were in attendance.

Georgiopoulos is a member of Leadership 100 and Chairman and CEO of Gener8 Maritime as well as the Founder and Chairman of its predecessor General Maritime Corporation and Genco Shipping and Trading Limited. Since December 2006 he has presided as Chairman of the Aegean Marine Petroleum Network Inc., a leading independent supplier of marine fuel.  He is an Archon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and is a member of the American Bureau of Shipping. He serves on the boards of the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, the Alfred E. Smith Foundation and the Ronald McDonald House.

His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios, Geron of America, gave the invocation. His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos of New Jersey and Gala Honorary Chairman John Tavlarios, Chief Operating Officer of Gener8 Maritime, two long-time friends and classmates of Georgiopoulos at St. Spyridon School in New York City, joined the Archbishop, Dean Poll, President of the Archdiocesan Cathedral Board of Trustees and Fr. John Vlahos, the Dean of the Cathedral, for the presentation of the award.

Gala Co-Chairs, Justin Bozonelis, who also served as Master of ceremonies, and Madelene Lambiris welcomed those attending, more than half of whom were young professionals.

Also in attendance were the Consul General of Greece, Dr. Konstantinos Koutras, the Consul General of Cyprus, Ambassador Vasilios Filippou, the Consul of Greece, Manos Koumbarakis, as well as Rev. Dr. Robert Stephanopoulos, Dean Emeritus of the Cathedral, and Presvytera Nikki.   

Georgiopoulos was born and raised in New York City. He and his family attended St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church in Manhattan.  He currently lives in New York City with his wife, Kara Young Georgiopoulos and their two sons, Nick and Constantine.
