Greek Independence Day Celebration at WABC Radio: A Tribute to Hellenic Culture

The Greek American community in New York City came together in grand style to celebrate Greek Independence Day at the WABC Radio Headquarters, hosted by philanthropists John and Margo Catsimatidis. This special event, organized by Eftihia Pylarinos Piper, Senior Vice President of Red Apple Group, not only commemorated Greece’s historic struggle for independence but also highlighted the cultural richness of the Greek American community and its strong ties to Greece.
The event began with a warm welcome from the Sinies Folklore Group, whose traditional music greeted guests and set the tone for the festivities. Opening remarks were made by John and Margo Catsimatidis, owners of WABC Radio and the Red Apple Group, and Eftihia Pylarinos Piper. Their speeches emphasized the importance of honoring Greek heritage while fostering deeper connections between the U.S. and Greece.

Congratulatory greetings were shared by His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros, His Excellency UN Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris, the Honorable Greek Consul General Iphigenia Kanara, and the Honorable Governor of the West Region of Greece, Nektarios Farmakis, who all underscored the enduring significance of Greek Independence Day and the shared values of democracy and freedom.
A roundtable discussion followed, featuring panelists John Catsimatidis, Chairman of Red Apple Group and WABC Radio; Philip Christopher, Chairman of the Greek Independence Day Parade; Paulette Poulos, Executive Director of Leadership 100; Anastasios Koularmanis, Director of Education for the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese; and Lou Katsos, Entrepreneur and Philanthropist, who served as moderator. The panel explored the historical and modern relevance of Greek Independence Day, emphasizing the importance of preserving cultural identity.
The event also featured a captivating performance by a traditional dance troupe from Corfu, led by Vice Mayor of North Corfu, Mr. John Garnelis, and the President of the Sinies Folklore Cultural Dance Group. Their vibrant performance, with stunning costumes and dynamic choreography, brought the beauty of Greek tradition to New York, delighting all in attendance.
Guests enjoyed a sumptuous feast, courtesy of food sponsors including Kyma Restaurants, led by Steve Tenedios, and Cap St. Georges Hotel & Resort, with business development support from Mr. Raj Brar.
The celebration also featured a mesmerizing vocal performance by soprano Anastasia Zanis, from Athens, Greece. Her powerful voice added elegance to the evening, further highlighting the cultural vibrancy of Greece.
John and Margo Catsimatidis, who are longtime and distinguished members of Leadership 100, with John a longtime member of the Executive Committee, are notable advocates for Hellenism and Greek culture. John also serves as Vice Chairman of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocesan Council.
