Archbishop Demetrios Presented with Check for Holy Cross Scholarships

Constantine G. Caras, Leadership 100 Chairman, presented His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios with a check for $500,000 for Holy Cross Scholarships at the Board of Trustees meeting September 10, 2010 in New York. The amount represented the second installment of a $1 million grant approved for 2010 by the Executive Committee at its meeting during the 19th Annual Leadership 100 Conference last February. At that time, the Committee committed to the extension of the scholarship program for seminarians preparing for the Priesthood at Holy Cross School of Theology in the amount of $1 million a year through 2018, re-designating the program “Leadership 100 Scholars” and setting new criteria for the granting of the scholarships recommended by a special committee headed by Charles H. Cotros, Leadership 100 Vice Chairman.

The action, endorsed by His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios, who is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Hellenic College/Holy Cross School of Theology, made the scholarship program the top priority of Leadership 100. The scholarship grants would provide tuition aid for seminarians in need of financial assistance who maintain a high grade point average and demonstrate exemplary character. The increase of the scholarship program will significantly advance the number of candidates for the Priesthood. Leadership 100 has provided a total of $12,403,617 million in scholarship aid to Hellenic College/ Holy Cross with the total distributions to the school standing at $15,122,217, more than half of all grants distributed by leadership 100 since its inception, which now stands at $29,581,236.
