It has been a month of vibrant celebration for our heritage!
Following the annual Greek Independence Day event at the White House on March 26, our community continues to honor our ancestors' bravery and contributions to our current democracies and societies in which we live.
President Donald Trump opened the doors of the White House for a spirited celebration marking the 205th Anniversary of Greek Independence Day, observed each year. This iconic reception, a tradition spanning four decades and every presidential administration, brings Greek Americans together to honor heritage, freedom, and the unshakable bond between Greece and the United States.
The "205/250" Milestone: This year’s celebration holds historic weight as it marks the 205th Anniversary of the Greek Revolution (1821) alongside the 250th Anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence (1776), highlighting the shared revolutionary ideals that bind our two nations.
A Proclamation of Democracy: Formal signing of the Presidential Proclamation, reaffirming March 25th as a "National Day of Celebration of Greek and American Democracy" - a tradition that has continued at the White House for four decades.
Strategic Partnership: High-level discussions focusing on the deepening ties between the U.S., Greece, and Cyprus, particularly regarding energy security and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.
In his remarks, President Trump celebrated the rich legacy of Greek civilization, spotlighting its profound influence on the birth of democracy and its lasting impact on the United States. He welcomed Archbishop Elpidophoros of America and honored the Greek-American community for their remarkable contributions to American culture, civic life, and heritage. “Today, we pay tribute to the roots of democracy and the enduring bond between America and Greece,” the President said, capturing the spirit of this historic celebration.
Responding to the President, Archbishop Elpidophoros emphasized the celebration’s significance. “Especially in this most significant year of 2026, when America observes its 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, and Greece commemorates its 205th year since its own assertion of liberty and justice for all - all Americans are rejoicing over this noble experiment in self-governance.”
The Archbishop also expressed gratitude for President Trump’s unwavering support of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, efforts to reopen the Theological School of Halki, and his steadfast backing of Greece and justice in Cyprus. He concluded with the prayer of Saint Basil the Great, inviting all present to pray for the nation, its leaders, and its citizens.
Joining the celebration were U.S. Ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, a number of prominent Greek-American philanthropists and leaders, and Archdiocesan Council Vice Chairman John Catsimatidis and his wife, Margo, both recognized for their leadership in the Greek-American community. John and Margo are members of Leadership 100, with John serving on the Executive Committee.
