On March 28, the Maliotis Cultural Center, in collaboration with the USS Constitution Museum, proudly commemorated Greek Independence Day with a truly meaningful and inspiring event held at one of America’s most historic landmarks.
Members of the Greek-American community gathered for a special afternoon that beautifully honored the legacy of the Greek War of Independence of 1821 through history, culture, and shared memory. The participation of the Maliotis Cultural Center was made possible through the efforts of the Executive Director, Presvytera Chrysoula Kourkounti, who organized and coordinated the event. The program was thoughtfully guided by Master of Ceremonies George Cantonis, whose presence added warmth and distinction to the occasion.
The event opened with welcoming remarks by Symeon Tegos, Consul General of Greece in Boston, followed by a compelling historical presentation on the USS Constitution’s connections to the Greek War of Independence, delivered by Nicholas Ganson and Carl Herzog.
At the heart of the program was the moving story of George Sirian, the young orphan from Psara who survived the devastation of 1821 and found refuge aboard the USS Constitution in 1827. His journey remains a powerful symbol of compassion, hope, and the enduring bonds between Greece and the United States. Guests had the rare opportunity to view personal belongings from his life, featured in the exhibit “From Psara to Old Ironsides.”
The celebration was enriched by beautiful performances from the Saint Romanos Choir and the Metropolis Dance Group, along with traditional Greek music, dances, and cuisine that created a vibrant and heartfelt atmosphere of community and cultural pride.
Earlier in the day, guests toured the historic USS Constitution and explored the museum galleries, further deepening their connection to this shared story of freedom and resilience.
A sincere thank you to all who contributed to making this event such a memorable tribute to our heritage and shared values, and in particular Leadership 100 for sponsoring the event.
