A Beacon of Hope in the Fight Against Human Trafficking
One of the most profound questions we can ask as Leadership 100 members is: "What does our support make possible?" In the case of the FREEDOM Ministry, the answer is a powerful, faith-based response to one of the most pressing moral crises of our time: human trafficking.
Established as the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America’s official training ministry and voice in governmental, NGO, and religious arenas, the FREEDOM Ministry has become an essential resource for parishes and agencies across the United States. With the support of a $40,000 Leadership 100 grant, this ministry has moved from a vision to a vital, active presence.
Measurable Impact and National Engagement
Since its launch, the ministry has aggressively pursued a mission of prevention, education, and response. The impact of this work is measurable on multiple levels, moving beyond simple advocacy to tangible action:
Transformative Pastoral Care:Perhaps the most poignant evidence of the ministry’s necessity occurred during parish visits, where four human trafficking survivors within the Archdiocese privately shared their stories. In each instance, these individuals—previously unknown to their own clergy—expressed that for the first time, they felt heard and supported by their Church.
Broad Educational Reach: Thousands of individuals have been trained through parish presentations, national radio audiences, and digital platforms.
Strategic Partnerships: The ministry has established critical credibility, engaging with leaders and personnel from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the United Nations, the Bahamas National Security Director for Trafficking in Persons, the U.S. Attorney’s Human Trafficking Summit, the World Council of Churches, and the Conference of Catholic Bishops in America.
Equipping the Faithful
The ministry does not simply raise awareness; it provides the tools for mobilization. A dedicated Human Trafficking Awareness Month webpage now serves as a central hub for parishes. This resource features curated educational materials, ministry toolkits for immediate implementation, survivor stories, and guidance from the Archbishop.
By shifting the conversation from a purely criminal issue to one that is also a moral and spiritual crisis, the FREEDOM Ministry is bridging faith communities and institutional partners. It is equipping the faithful with theological grounding and practical action steps to confront modern-day slavery with clarity, competence, and conviction.
Our Partnership
This critical work has been made possible through the generosity of Leadership 100. Funding has been strategically allocated toward contracted professional services for program implementation, travel to facilitate national training, and the development of digital resources.
