Deborah Norville to Speak at Conference
Deborah Norville, broadcast journalist and author, will address a special Saturday Spouses’ Program at the Leadership 100 25th Anniversary Celebration Conference, February 7, 2009 at The Ritz-Carlton San Juan Hotel in Carolina, Puerto Rico. A two-time Emmy Award winner, Norville has hosted Inside Edition for more than a decade.
Tsandikos Fulfills Pledge
George Solon Tsandikos of Greenwich, Connecticut, a member of the Board of Trustees and Chairman of the Audit Committee, fulfilled his Leadership 100 pledge. Tsandikos was elected to the Board in 2007 to fill the vacancy created by the death of Harry Magafan.
Gialamas to be Honored
George Gialamas, owner and CEO of the Gialamas Company, a commercial real estate company in Madison, Wisconsin, and a member of the Leadership 100 Board of Trustees, will be honored with the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Marquette University Helen Way Klingler College of Arts and Sciences in a ceremony on Thursday, April 24, 2009.
Chairman Addresses Clery-Laity
Chairman Stephen G. Yeonas, in an address to the plenary session of the 39th Biennial Clergy-Laity Congress of The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, which concluded in Washington, D.C. July 18th, said clergy and laity “formed a bridge and this connection is critical to the strength and spiritual life of any church.”
Campaign Chairmen Meet
Regional and Metropolis Chairmen of the 25th Anniversary Campaign met at Leadership 100 offices at the Olympic Tower in New York to plan events in the Direct Archdiocesan District of New York and the Metropolis of New Jersey and to assist Paulette Poulos, Executive Director (Interim), in scheduling events across the nation over the remainder of 2008.
Home Mission Grant
Leadership 100 has supported the Home Mission Parish Program for a decade, with total funding of $1,060,200. In 2008, a grant of $105,000 was awarded to this critical program. Home Mission helps establish new Greek Orthodox parishes and helps support small Greek Orthodox parishes that are striving to become self-supporting parishes of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.
Digital Archive for the 21st Century
Leadership 100 has committed support of a long-term project to digitize documents, photographs, resources and valuable collections of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America with a multi-year grant of $400,000 through 2009.
New Foundation Formed
A new foundation has been established by Charles H. Cotros, Leadership 100 Executive Committee member, Thomas L. Demakes, Leadership 100 member and Harry J. Pappas of Houston, Texas, to raise and invest funds on behalf of Hellenic College and Holy Cross School of Theology.
New Book By L100 Member
John Psarouthakis, a pioneering scientist-entrepreneur and member of Leadership 100,released a new book, Elisabeth’s Gift, in which he chronicles the story of his upbringing, after being orphaned.
Vassiliou Elected Anatolia Trustee
Argyris Vassiliou, a member of Leadership 100, has been elected to the Anatolia College Board of Trustees, following in the footsteps of his father-in-law, John Pappajohn, a member of the Leadership 100 Board of Trustees for more than a decade, who has served on the board of the Thessaloniki, Greece-based school for some 20 years.
George P. Kokalis Eulogized at Phoenix Cathedral
George P. Kokalis, a Founding Member of Leadership 100 and its dynamic Chairman from 1996 to 2000, who died suddenly June 24, was eulogized in Holy Trinity Cathedral in Phoenix, AZ June 29 by Metropolitan Gerasimos of San Francisco, Fr. Nicholas Triantafilou, President of Hellenic College-Holy Cross School of Theology and Paulette Poulos, Executive Director (Interim) of Leadership 100 (Eulogy follows).
A Journey to Priesthood
In April, a group of seminarians who had benefited from the Leadership 100 Scholarship for Excellence established at Holy Cross School of Theology visited the Leadership 100 offices in the Olympic Tower in New York City. Jaharis Gift to Hellenic College-Holy Cross
Mr. Michael Jaharis, a Founder of Leadership 100, who is the vice-chairman of the Archdiocesan Council, and his wife, Mary, a fulfilled member of Leadership 100, announced a gift of $5 million to Hellenic College-Holy Cross School of Theology, the largest in its history, as they were given honorary Doctorates of Humanities at the 66th Commencement Services on May 17.
L100 Members Support Camp Agape
Gerry and Jeannie Ranglas, Leadership 100 members from Rancho Santa Fe, California, hosted a fund-raising event last April in Los Angeles for Camp Agape, a summer camp facility for children with cancer supported by the Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society and initiated by the late Metropolitan Anthony of the Metropolis of San Francisco. Paulette Poulos, Executive Director (Interim) of Leadership attended, hearing the families of children who attended the camp give personal testimony to their experiences.
Karakas Gift to University of Missouri St. Louis
Nicholas Karakas, a member of Leadership 100, donated $1.5 million to The University of Missouri St. Louis to endow a chair in Byzantine and Orthodox Studies. UMSL Chancellor Tom George made the announcement during his annual report to the community at America's Center. “This generous gift from Mr. Karakas will allow the university to offer a comprehensive study of the history, culture, politics and individuals of the Byzantine Empire, one of the most powerful economic and cultural forces in Europe,” George said.
Drexel’s President Constantine Receives William Penn Award
The Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce honored Drexel University President and Leadership100 Member, Dr. Constantine Papadakis, with the 2007 William Penn Award before a packed crowd at a gala event on April 18. The gala had a Greek theme and featured a performance by Greek dancers honoring Papadakis’ Greek heritage. He was joined at the celebration by his wife Eliana and their daughter Maria.
Gregory C. Pappas to Join X PRIZE Advisory Council
The X PRIZE Foundation, an educational nonprofit prize institute created to foster radical breakthroughs for the benefit of humanity, announced on May 28 that Gregory Pappas, L100 member and publisher of Greek America Magazine, has been invited to join the Foundation's Advisory Council.
