The American Hellenic Council Honors Dean Spanos
The American Hellenic Council (AHC) of California honored Dean Spanos, the owner and Chairman of the Board of the Los Angeles Chargers and President of A.G. Spanos Companies and a longtime member of Leadership 100, at its Annual Awards Gala on April 1, 2017 at the Omni Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles.
Dr. Steven Kalkanis Enrolled in Neurological Society
Dr. Steven N. Kalkanis, a new member of Leadership 100, was acknowledged by The Society of Neurological Surgeons with membership in 2016. He is professor and, following a national search in 2014, Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery and Co-Director of the Neuroscience Institute at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Michigan, where he also serves as Director of the Henry Ford Cancer Institute.
Leadership 100 Conference Awards
Leadership 100, meeting at its 26th Annual Conference at the Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa in Manalapan, Florida from February 9-12, 2017, conferred the Archbishop Iakovos Award for Excellence upon Dr. Anthony S. Papadimitriou, President of the Onassis Foundation, James S. Chanos, the pioneering investment manager, Jonathan Jackson, the Emmy Award-winning actor, musician and author, and Gus Kalaris, founder and owner of Constantine Wines, Inc.
A special Archbishop Iakovos Founders Award was presented to Chairman Emeritus Stephen G. Yeonas, for his contributions both as National Membership Chairman and as Chairman of Leadership 100. The presentations took place at the Grand Banquet on Saturday, February 11, 2017.
Greek Orthodox Archdiocese to Continue Leadership 100 Funded Fellowships at the UN
The Department of Inter-Orthodox, Ecumenical and Interfaith Relations of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America is inviting graduate and recent post-graduate students to apply for its fellowships at the United Nations, a program of its Faith-based Diplomacy and Advocacy Initiative launched in 2015 with $300,000 in funding from Leadership 100. Since then, a total of three fellowships have been granted.

Leadership 100 has provided generous support for Orthodox Christian Network (OCN) over many years. The most recent grant was for $250,000 over two years, 2015 and 2016. Total grant support from 2001 was $450,000.

AHI’s Foundation Library Named in Honor of E. John & Cleo Rumpakis
The American Hellenic Institute Foundation (AHIF) announced on January 18, 2017 that AHI’s Foundation Library in Hellenic House will be rededicated and named in honor of E. John and Cleo Rumpakis, of Portland, Oregon, members of Leadership 100, who donated $175,000 to the organization in December of 2016, one of the largest gifts received by AHIF, according to AHI President Nick Larigakis.

Leadership 100 Executive Committee Approves $250,000 Gift To Rebuild Devastated Ionian Village in Greece
The Leadership 100 Executive Committee, at a special meeting on December 20, 2016, unanimously approved a gift of $250,000 toward the rebuilding of the Ionian Village, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocesan Summer Camp in Greece, which was devastated by a tornado formed in the Ionian Sea making landfall on September 8, 2016, according to George S. Tsandikos, Chairman.

The Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco honored the extraordinary leadership of Gerry and Jeannie Ranglas, longtime members of Leadership 100, and celebrated the Metropolis ministries at the 2016 Gala, Saturday, November 12, at the Island Hotel in Newport Beach, California. The Ranglas couple were honored with the Theofanis Economidis Award in recognition of their devoted stewardship and exemplary leadership on behalf of the Metropolis of San Francisco. His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos of San Francisco remarked: “This honor being bestowed upon you tonight does not signify the completion of your work, but rather it pays tribute to your faithful service and your ongoing devotion to the Church.”

Merkourios A. Angeliades, known as “Mike”, a prominent member of Leadership 100, was honored by Hellenic Public Radio-COSMOS FM 91.5 with The Phidippides Award at the 21st Annual Phidippides Award Gala Dinner on November 5, 2016 at Terrace on the Park in Flushing, New York. A native of Symi, Greece, who immigrated to the United States in 1960, Angeliades was acknowledged for his “passionate advocacy of Hellenism.”

AHI Founder Honored By Republic Of Cyprus For Exceptional Service
American Hellenic Institute (AHI) Founder Eugene T. Rossides, a member of Leadership 100, was honored with the Republic of Cyprus Presidential Exceptional Service Medal on November 10, 2016, at a ceremony in Washington, DC. Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to the United States Leonidas Pantelides presented the medal to Rossides “as a token of our gratitude for a lifetime of dedication to Cyprus and its cause.” The medal requires the approval of Cyprus’s Council of Ministers.

John Payiavlas Honored with Jaharis Service Award At Washington Oxi Day Foundation Event
Leadership 100 Chairman Emeritus John A. Payiavlas was honored with the First Annual Jaharis Service Award for his service in the Korean War by the Washington Oxi Day Foundation on October 27, 2016. Michael Jaharis, who passed away in February of 2016 was a Founder of Leadership 100 and a renowned Church leader, philanthropist and business entrepreneur. Presenting the Award was the Jaharis Family Foundation Executive Director, Peggy Sotirhos Nicholson. The ceremony took place on Capitol Hill in the Senate Armed Services Committee Room.
George D. Behrakis Honored at National Hellenic Society Heritage Weekend and Classic
Leadership 100 Chairman Emeritus George D. Behrakis, renowned philanthropist and pharmaceutical industry entrepreneur, was honored at the annual National Hellenic Society (NHS) “Heritage Weekend and Classic” retreat, held October 6-9 at the JW Marriott Las Vegas Resort & Spa in Las Vegas, Nevada. His portrait, painted by artist Euripides “Rip” Kastaris, will be inducted into the permanent collection of the Greek American Story at the National Hellenic Museum in Chicago.
